Bio:

Simon Husslein’s work is driven by principles of simplicity and coherence, underpinned by technical expertise and experience at the highest level. His design method begins and ends with the search for ‘the’ fundamental concept, a long-term solution to the project’s needs and one which will prove to be right in theory and in practice. Each design is shaped by its own inherent system, a concept that carries through from the idea to implementation. It is a demanding method, but one that promotes sustainable solutions: continually testing the validity of ideas leads to concepts that can easily be grasped, both visually and technically. Maintaining coherence between the initial concept and the outcome also means pushing for harmony of form, colour and structure. Materials must fit these formal demands as well as being intrinsically appropriate to the given object or project.

Today design is a saturated field, where designers often follow in the footsteps of past visionaries. In this context, Husslein continually tries to improve on archetypes, maybe even challenging our understanding of what something might be. Nonetheless, the client or the brand is incalculably important, because a project is only successful if it works for them.  

These standards present an ever-evolving challenge, but the ethos of Atelier Simon Husslein is also to enjoy experimentation, to listen to instincts and appreciate the poetry in objects and spaces. The power of delight, surprise or humour is never underestimated.
